Nashville Boxing Great Johnny Bumphus Dies

After suffering cardiac arrest, Nashville native and boxing great, Johnny Bumphus passed away Friday in a hospital in Tacoma, Washington. He was 59. Bumphus, became the nation's No. 1-ranked 139 pounder for three years back to back. He went on to win a national Golden Gloves and two national AAU crowns, not to mention a member of the U.S. Olympic team. They later boycotted the Moscow Games as well.

Bumphus reached his prime when he became the nation’s No. 1-ranked 139-pounder for three consecutive years. He also won a national Golden Gloves and two national AAU crowns and was a member of the U.S. Olympic team, which later boycotted the Moscow Games.

Bumphus retired with a 29-2 pro record, including 20 wins by knockout.
