Nashville Barbershops to Improve the Health of Black Men

Culturally, the barbershop in the Black community has been a place of social, entertainment and a place of news conversation. Beginning this month, participating Nashville barbershops will become a place for health checks. It is known that high blood pressure is a huge factor in the black community. Hypertension has been a "silent killer" for a long time.

To help fight against this health concern, barbershops will provide checking of vitals while getting patrons receive haircuts. Research has shown that barbershops successfully support the medical care. It has been proven in both Texas and California. The study is currently backed by Vanderbilt, Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute in Los Angeles, UCLA, Nashville Health and My Brother's Keeper in Nashville.
